Ned Marine Services acquires MTQ Products

Dutch manufacturers MTQ Products BV and Ned Marine Services BV have joined forces. With this acquisition, Ned Marine expands its capabilities to design and deliver high-quality aluminium products (esp. gangways, ladders and bridges) for the maritime and offshore industries, as well as for land-based construction companies.

“With MTQ Products now incorporated into our structure, our reach and in-house manufacturing capacity expands significantly,” says Ger Monster, Managing Director of Ned Marine says. “Our products are light, strong aluminium constructions, designed in-house according to the latest certification guidelines.”

Ger, who founded Ned Marine in 2010, continues: “Ned Marine and MTQ have found each other in offering tailored solutions to match their client’s wishes. Both adhere to high, strict design and production standards. In addition, we see an increasing demand, a need even, for certified products with our customers. This is determined both by legislation, and changing market demands. Together we can serve these customers fast and efficient with a wide range of standard products on stock, as well as with tailor-made access structures.”

Ned Marine complies to the requirements of virtually all classification bureaus and those of its customers. Hence, clients are ensured that their operations can start or proceed continuously and safely, whether they are about vessel or offshore platform access or about industrial construction sites.

Note that Ned Marine is currently the strongest player in the European aluminium gangway market, in addition to having a strong position in cathodic protection solutions and non-destructive testing services. The acquisition of MTQ means that the company’s products are not only built I larger quantities and according to high standards, but also faster and more cost-effective, leading to shorter delivery times.

Pilot Ladders for safe and compliant transfers

pilot ladders

Pilot Ladders at the heart of safe vessel transfers

Every day, pilots board and leave vessels under demanding conditions: moving water, limited visibility, varying freeboards and strict time windows. The pilot ladder is the single most important element in this transfer. International regulations such as SOLAS, IMO resolutions and ISO standards exist for one reason: to reduce risk in one of the most exposed moments of a vessel’s operation.

A pilot ladder must function reliably in ballast and loaded conditions, in calm seas and rough weather, and across a wide range of vessel designs. Any compromise in ladder quality, length, securing or certification directly affects the safety of pilots and crew.

Compliance, configuration and operational reality

Selecting the right pilot ladder is more complex than it may appear. In practice, shipowners and technical managers face several recurring challenges.

SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 23 requires a pilot ladder long enough to reach the waterline even when the vessel is in ballast condition with up to 15° of adverse list. While legally correct, this can result in ladders that are longer than ideal in day-to-day operations, creating handling and safety issues if excess steps rest on the pilot boat deck.

When the distance from sea level to the point of access exceeds 9 metres, a combination arrangement is mandatory. This requires precise interaction between the accommodation ladder and the pilot ladder, including minimum overlap, sufficient clearance for the pilot boat and independent securing points. Errors in configuration are a frequent cause of non-compliance during inspections.

Pilot ladders are certified safety equipment. They must comply with ISO 799-1, often be MED-approved for EU-flagged vessels, and be supported by valid onboard certification. After 30 months of service, ladders require periodic strength testing. Inadequate documentation, unclear markings or uncertified replacements can lead to deficiencies, delays or detentions.

Even the best ladder fails if it is incorrectly rigged. Proper securing with side ropes, correct knots, designated strong points and trained crew procedures are essential. The ISM Code requires these checks to be embedded in the vessel’s maintenance and safety routines.

Certified pilot ladders and practical guidance

Ned Marine supports shipowners with pilot ladder solutions that address both regulatory demands and operational reality.

  • ISO 799-1 compliant pilot ladders, clearly marked and supplied with authentic certification
  • MED-approved options for EU-flagged vessels and compatibility with class requirements such as DNV, Lloyd’s Register or ABS
  • Different ladder configurations, including standard pilot ladders and robust Goliath pilot ladders with high-visibility, impact-resistant materials
  • Guidance on correct ladder length, helping operators balance SOLAS compliance with safe, practical use
  • Support for combination arrangements, ensuring correct overlap, clearance and independent securing of ladders
  • Advice on inspection, ageing and replacement, including strength testing intervals and documentation management

By treating the pilot ladder as part of a complete pilot transfer arrangement rather than a standalone product, risks are reduced and compliance becomes manageable.

Eddy Current Testing

The Eddy Current method is used to detect discontinuities in pipe and tubing by subjecting the material to a strong external magnetic field. A test coil which includes Eddy currents in the material is used for this purpose. If a discontinuity exists, there will be variations in the Eddy currents produced and these will be indicated by a signal in the test equipment.

Eddy Current Testing

Scientific Principles of Eddy Current Testing

Alternating electrical current is passed through a coil producing a magnetic field. When the coil is placed near a conductive material, the changing magnetic field induces current flow in the material. These currents travel in closed loops and are called Eddy currents. Eddy currents produce their own magnetic field that can be measured and used to find flaws and characterize conductivity, permeability, and dimensional features.

Main Uses

Used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in conductive materials, such as the metals. Eddy Current inspection is also used to sort materials based on electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability, and measures the thickness of thin sheets of metal and non-conductive coatings such as paint.

Main Advantages of Eddy Current Testing

  • detects surface and near surface defects;
  • test probe does not need to contact the part;
  • method can be used for more than flaw detection;
  • minimum part preparation is required.

Vacuum Box Testing

Safe and efficient leak detection with Vacuum Box Testing

Vacuum Box Testing can be used on lap welds, shell to annular welds, butt welds, pressure vessels, piping systems, among many others. This method is great as it is capable of immediately locating any leaks. It can also detect the smallest leaks inside a given area.

Ned Marine’s professionals are trained and experienced in vacuum box bubble test methods in accordance with the ASME BPVC code, section V, article 10, Appendix II.

Please contact us if you require any more information or a quote.

What Is Vacuum Box Testing?

Vacuum Box Testing is a non-destructive method used to detect leaks and discontinuities in welds, tank bottoms, pipelines and pressure-retaining structures. By creating a controlled pressure difference inside a vacuum box and applying a contrast soap solution, even the smallest defects become visible as air bubbles. This technique is especially valuable in environments where safety and integrity are critical, such as maritime vessels, offshore installations and industrial storage tanks. It provides immediate, reliable visual confirmation without damaging the material.

How the Vacuum Box Method Works

The inspector applies a soap solution to the weld and places the vacuum box over it. When the vacuum pump creates negative pressure, any leakage path forces air through the defect, producing clear bubbles. This simple but effective mechanism allows rapid testing of long weld seams with consistent accuracy, even on irregular surfaces.

Where Vacuum Box Testing Is Most Effective

This method is ideal for large surface areas or components that cannot be pressurised internally. Typical applications include storage tank floors, ship hull plating, ballast tanks, pipelines, offshore skids, and pressure vessel attachments. It is particularly useful when other NDT methods—such as UT or radiography—are too costly, slow, or impractical.

Standards and Certification

Vacuum Box Testing at Ned Marine is performed according to recognised industry standards, including ASME BPVC Section V, Article 10, and applicable ASTM guidelines. Our inspectors are certified and trained to ensure precise execution and correct interpretation of all bubble indications. This guarantees compliance for marine, offshore and industrial inspection requirements.

Our Vacuum Box Testing Service

Ned Marine provides mobile vacuum box testing on board vessels, in shipyards, tank terminals and industrial sites. Our team conducts fast turnaround inspections, supports repair teams with direct feedback, and documents all findings in clear inspection reports. With broad experience in maritime and offshore environments, we ensure that safety-critical structures remain compliant, reliable and leak-free.

Because when you truly care about the people around you, compliance is not just about meeting formal requirements, it’s about what genuinely contributes to the well-being of people and the environment.

What does this mean in practice?

  • A straightforward and proactive approach to identifying risks.
  • Taking responsibility rather than shifting it.
  • Demonstrating leadership to continuously improve safety and quality.

This is how we at NedMarine bring QHSE to life in our daily operations.

Entrepreneurial mindset and quality-driven work

Living up to safety, quality, and environmental standards also means embracing an entrepreneurial mindset. That is acting in the interest of quality and being driven by the motivation to deliver top-tier professional products and services.

For us, regulations are not the ultimate benchmark but the minimum framework. Our entrepreneurial drive pushes us to continuously refine our processes, ensuring that our customers benefit from high-quality products and services. This means not just focusing on compliance but proactively seeking ways to optimize safety and operational processes.

Open company culture and responsibility

At Ned Marine, we foster a culture where colleagues feel a strong sense of responsibility and commitment toward each other. This open culture encourages employees to report incidents, near misses, and unsafe situations without hesitation. By doing so, we learn from mistakes and prevent serious accidents in the future.

This means holding each other accountable for risks, whether related to workplace conditions or individual behavior. This openness, driven by a shared concern for each other’s well-being, is the only way to move safety from paper into real-life practice.

Protect your hull from unwanted organisms

By deterring marine organisms without causing harm to the protected metal, Ned Marine’s class-approved anti-fouling anodes help maintain the longevity of your hull, and of maritime equipment below the waterline. The result: No more barnacles, algae or otgher organisms attaching themselves to your ship, hence reduced maintenance costs and better fuel efficiency.

Like all our anodes, these are designed in-house and produced by two hand-picked factories – companies we not only monitor, but have come to be trusted suppliers, delivering high-quality anodes to our specs year after year. Our flexible production line ensures cost-efficient rates in addition to our quality control system that guarantees reliable operation of our anti-fouling anodes.
